Autumn. The season of comfort food is upon us...

This time of year, and as nights draw in and the wood burner stops being a redundant lump of iron and starts to be the life and soul of the party again,
I find my thoughts turning towards comfort food. And nothing is more satisfying than a comfort food pudding. So last night I made myself 'A Queen of Puddings', the recipe being an approximation of that found in a 1969 copy of 'Mrs Beeton's Cookery and Household Management'. Basically it's some breadcrumbs (I had plenty of those from loaves that I'd frozen, then unfrozen, and had slices disintegrate), a reasonable knob of butter, granulated sugar (an approximate amount-judged by eye.... and later by taste so don't get it wrong! Say 125g), a lemon's rind and juice, and a couple of egg yolks, all mixed together with a pint of boiling milk. Then put that in an oven at say 180c for forty minutes until set and slightly browned. Then smear some strawberry jam on top, before adding on top of that the meringue mix of the whipped egg whites and caster sugar (again, quantity by eye, but say 100g). Put in a low oven (150c or lower) for 15 to 20 mins. The great thing, to me, about this pudding is that it tastes equally delicious hot or cold, so it will be hanging around my fridge for a bit.... but I suspect not for long! Yes, later in the evening I lit the woodburner (first time this year), and ended up watching a TV programme that made the case that the 1980's were pop music's greatest decade. I'm not sure I'd agree, but it was a good night in anyway and I was warm and happy. Which was the general aim....
